The beginning

In a blog post last week, I let everyone know that I’m going to focus a little bit on my personal journey into a career in literature. I’m at the point in that road now that I need to choose which way to go. I feel like I’m standing before one of those poles with a million signs, all pointing somewhere unique and exciting.

Where to first?

I’ve put a lot of thought into where I can fit into the industry. And I’ve decided that for my main source of income (something I admit, I have to factor into the decision), I’m going to work as a book illustrator/cover designer.

I’ve always painted and drawn. As a child, I never stopped trying new mediums and expressing myself through visual images. I’ve sold pieces here and there, but never considered being an artist as a feasible career option. Now that I’m older and know that it is literature that I’m most passionate about, it seems that the perfect career for me is to use my artistic abilities to be a part of the creation of books (kind of like how I’ve incorporated both into a magazine).

I’m going to go grab some new art supplies at the store and get honing my skills.

BEST IDEA EVER……………..

I was thinking about the whole video interview concept, and came up with a wicked neat idea to further the plan. In Grade 10, students are asked to take a class called Careers (obviously, I skipped that one a lot). They are asked – as an end of the year whoop-dee-do – to “job shadow somebody in a field they’ve found interesting throughout the course.

Dear School Board,

I know we’ve had our differences in the past; Y’know, the whole you wanting me to actually attend school, and me… well, not. But this idea’s a keeper! I hope you don’t mind that I’m stealing it.

 La dee da,

Amy

I’m gunna shadow the careers I’m considering and give ‘em the old college grade ten try before I jump right in. This way you guys can also see how it’s done (I’m going to keep a video diary of the day… hence, furthering the plan). Brilliant!

More good news! We can update the Piggy Bank!

GOAL: $500 – EARNED: $46 – NEED: $454

I have sold one of the paintings hanging at the Lotus Centre! Thank you muchly for the support and I will send you a postcard from the PTS course! Ole! (More on this tmrw)

Uninspiring

Woke this morning, reached onto my bedside table, and picked up a book I’ve been reading about how to make your blog more effective. I read for about 5 seconds, and then fell asleep on top of the book….

It seems that I have lost touch with why I started this journey in the first place. It was my intention to find a career(s) I am passionate about and enjoy spending time doing. It was not to track the stats of the site and get lost in the mumbo-jumbo of technicalities. I do enjoy writing to you guys, and love to hear your feedback, but how can I inspire you to become more resonant with your life, if I can’t walk the walk?

Thus, I took a day to enjoy the sun and get back to doing something I thoroughly enjoy – creating. There was a passage I read yesterday in a book I’m reading (Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy by Sarah Ban Breatnach) that eloquently explained the marvel of creation:

”It takes a lifetime to create the work of art for which we were born: an authentic life. But it only takes five minutes to center yourself before you begin each new task today

Taking the time to get centered, for me, means asking the question “Does this feel right?” So, Miss Amy, does reading a book about blogging feel right? Or does painting on the porch in the heat as summer comes to an end feel right? I’ll gladly choose the latter. (And you’ll find, very quickly, that as you take the lead and choose the experiences that feel right, the authentic life you wish to live with follow).

What will put the bounce back in your step today?

I have a hunch that from here on out, things will begin to run much smoother for this girl.

Brilliant!

To Do List

As promised, this is the list of things that I’m going to try first! (In no particular order, as the order depends on time and money):

  1. Dog walker
  2. Yoga teacher
  3. Florist
  4. Photographer
  5. Fashion Designer

Also on the list were Life Coach and Visual Artist, but I have tried those two before I began this blog. Neither turned out to be for me for various reasons… mainly that I just wasn’t feelin’ it.

Which should I conquer first? I plan to get as many Dog Walking clients as possible so that I can use the money I earn to finance my next adventure… So please, email the link to your friends, family and anyone you think may be interested in following my journey! Who knows what service I will provide next, maybe they will want to take part!

Which one of these should I do next?!

Boldly,

AMY
